Hearing God’s Voice During a Marriage Retreat

In the middle of marital conflict or disconnection, it can be difficult to hear anything—especially the voice of God. Arguments, tension, and emotional exhaustion drown out the stillness that Scripture encourages us to seek. Many couples come to The Ravines feeling distant from each other and even more distant from God. But one of the most powerful outcomes of a Christian marriage retreat is the opportunity to hear His voice again.

Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray. He modeled a rhythm of stepping away from the crowd to spend time with the Father. A retreat follows that same pattern. It invites couples to move away from the chaos of everyday life and into a setting where they can finally breathe—and listen.

Why We Struggle to Hear

In the busyness of careers, kids, and endless responsibilities, our spiritual lives can become muted. Add in the pain and confusion of a struggling marriage, and it’s no surprise many couples feel spiritually disconnected. They may question God’s presence or His plan. They may feel alone in their pain.

At The Ravines, we create space to interrupt that pattern. Through extended one-on-one counseling sessions, prayer, and time for rest, couples are guided into a posture of listening—both to one another and to the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Stillness is a prerequisite for spiritual clarity, and the retreat environment provides it in a way few other settings can.

Creating Space for God’s Voice

Every part of the retreat experience is intentionally designed to support spiritual reflection. From the peaceful setting to the structure of sessions, the focus is on reconnecting with truth. Often, it’s in the quiet moments—between sessions, during personal prayer, or on a walk through nature—that couples begin to sense God speaking.

Sometimes it comes as conviction. Sometimes comfort. Sometimes guidance for the road ahead. But again and again, we see couples leave with a renewed awareness of God’s voice and His desire to restore what’s been broken.

Listening Together

When both spouses tune their hearts to God, something beautiful begins to happen. Their communication shifts. Their empathy deepens. Their goals realign. They remember that their marriage is not just a contract—it’s a covenant, and God is part of it.

Couples often describe this shared spiritual awakening as the most meaningful part of their retreat. Hearing God together, in the same place, at the same time, brings a unity that no technique or textbook could ever produce.

What Happens Afterward?

The clarity couples receive during a retreat often becomes the foundation for long-term change. They return home not only with renewed communication skills but with a stronger sense of spiritual direction. They leave knowing God has spoken—and that He is not finished with their story.

Whether His voice comes in a whisper or a breakthrough moment, He is always speaking. Sometimes we just need to step away to hear Him clearly.
